Marcelina Garcia:

CLASS OF 1975
Edcouch, TX

Marcelina's Story

Life Ever wonder whatever happened to all your classmates? I do. My family says I have selective memory, because often I only remember things I choose or allow myself to remember. When I do, there is plenty of stuff that's pretty neat. A great deal of my childhood memories go back to Edcouch-Elsa. My family lived in Elsa during my Elementary years, and I remember vividly the long walk past Ciro Casares' store all the way to John F. Kennedy Elementary School. My very bad experience with Mr. Vela impressed me with a memory whereby I never forgot his name. I don't remember very many of my Teachers, but I remember him. I remember Miss Cervantes who later became Mrs. Pena, because she was nice. I remember the Pena twin brothers who were both teachers. One of them in Biology. I remember them because they were identical twins and they were good looking. But mostly, they were fair to us kids. Later we moved to Edcouch where we were enrolled at the "Migrant School" because we traveled "up north" each year to work the fields. I had a fight with a girl named Florestella there, because she always kept taking my stuff and "bullying" me. After that, we were best friends. It seems there were always fights at the "Migrant School". We lost my brother Frank while I was enrolled there in 1967. The whole school came out to our house to pay their respects. I never forgot that, and I never thanked everyone, but it was a gesture I deeply appreciated and never forgot. I was 12 at the time. After that I went to the Middle School accross from the Dairy Cream outfit on 107. I remember Mr. Farley, because he invited all the 7th grade class to his house for a party of Hot Dogs and stuff. Just going was a memorable event. He helped us make a school marker that sat out front at the school for many years. He did that kind of work. It was shaping concrete and ingraining stones into it while it was still wet in order to form a pattern. Our marker had the school name on it. He wa...Expand for more
s old in our eyes, but I respected him for giving us time. I remember the wonderful smells from that cafeteria at lunchtime. Never mind that a good number of us were on free lunch. It was all good back then, cause alot of things you didn't even know about. (Like who all got free lunches) High School was like the most admired of all schools. There everyone was all grown up and ready for the finish line. That was where you made it or not. The hookey players most of the time did not make it. That is really sad. It is sad because as young people, we are so ignorant of the consequences of our actions and the impact on our futures. Not only ours, but also those of our families. Yet, High School was where so many of the vividly remembered memories took place. There was Mrs. Sorenson the Counselor. Mr. Pipkin the Principal, followed by Mr. Gorostisa. There was the famous Mrs. Reyes the girls coach. I forever remember her "Cry", and my children have laughed with it over the years when I told them about it and used it on them. "move it, move it, move it" Then there was Home Economics Class where we went because we knew that whatever we cooked, we could eat. But nothing compared to the Yellow Jacket Spirit you could cut with a knife at the football games. The nostalgic smell in the warm air filled of popcorn and sour pickles and the sight of coke on an ice filled cup is still impressionable in my mind. Since I left The Valley, I have traveled to many places, I have visited most of the states in the Country, I have lived in a few of them, but no place compares with the life of my hometown. As a child, I was always eager to return to The Valley from our trips north. There was an aura that pertained only to it. Today, hitting 50, I am still that eager child feeling that same aura every time I come home. It has to do with the place. It also has much to do with the people who live there. Most definitely, it has to do with my school year memories of all my friends.
